Joy, the Memory Keeper–8th grade graduation

8th Grade Graduation

I wore blue cotton sateen with a black velvet ribbon
sewn by Mom on her new White electric machine,
to graduate on the stage of Dexter’s elliptical
1916 Community Building where my parents
played high school basketball.

I was handed a diploma by Dr. Chapler,
who delivered me fourteen years earlier,
who had patched up two of the Barrow gang
after the 1933 shootout in Dexfield Park.

    • Thank you, John. My mother was 14 when she saw Buck and Blanche Barrow come out of the doctors’ office in Dexter. She was sent to jail. He was sent to a hospital in Perry for surgery, but died just a few days later. Bonnie and Clyde returned to the area (Stuart) the next April to rob the bank!

  1. Besides maturing, you don’t appear to have changed a whole lot, Joy. Your mother was quite the seamstress! When your granddaughter is able to fit into your graduation dress, it would be a fun pic to take. 🙂
