8th Grade GraduationI wore blue cotton sateen with a black velvet ribbon sewn by Mom on her new White electric machine, to graduate on the stage of Dexter’s elliptical 1916 Community Building where my parents played high school basketball. I was handed a diploma by Dr. Chapler, who delivered me fourteen years earlier, who had patched up two of the Barrow gang after the 1933 shootout in Dexfield Park. Meadowlark Songs
I don’t think we realize just how much of our lives is actually unique history.
I didn’t until I walked into the Dexter Museum and realized how many displays I could relate to! Thank you, GP.
The Memory Keeper—a title that should be worn with pride. One of my brothers is the keeper of our family’s physical memories.
Thank you, Pete. It’s a blessing, but now I get to decide what happens to what’s left.
So interesting— the doctor who delivered you presenting your diploma and the Barrow gang connection, too. You looked adorable!🥰
Thank you, Lori. I still have the dress. Yikes, huh!
Not yikes at all! I love it, Joy!
Great history, Joy. Thanks
Thank you, John. My mother was 14 when she saw Buck and Blanche Barrow come out of the doctors’ office in Dexter. She was sent to jail. He was sent to a hospital in Perry for surgery, but died just a few days later. Bonnie and Clyde returned to the area (Stuart) the next April to rob the bank!
I love it! So much history behind that photograph.
Oh, thanks so much, Liz!
You’re welcome, Joy!
Besides maturing, you don’t appear to have changed a whole lot, Joy. Your mother was quite the seamstress! When your granddaughter is able to fit into your graduation dress, it would be a fun pic to take. 🙂
Sis Gloria and I soon took over sewing when we joined 4-H. Thank you, Nancy, that would be a fun picture! I also have some bellbottom pants (from the 1970s) I’d like to see her try!
She will probably think bellbottoms are “cool,” or whatever word they’re using now. 🤣
Love it!
There’s so much history there, and the photo is incredible.
Thank you, Edward.
Haha! Bellbottoms are coming back into style. They call them flares, but we know better. 🤣
Flares, huh! I’m passing this time. How about you, Nancy???
I’m with you. I’m not interested in those floppy jeans. 😝
That’s a great picture of your graduation, Joy. You look very nice.
Thank you, Tim. I still have the dress my mother made!
😊
