“What Leora Never Knew is a touching and captivating tale of an American family who endured the unimaginable heartbreak of losing three sons during WWII. As the niece of these three courageous men, the author chronicles her quest of uncovering more about their lives, service, and last missions.

“While reading, I especially enjoyed the snippets from letters her uncles mailed home, as well as learning about their hobbies, dreams, and love for family. It reminded me that behind every casualty of war is a unique person with a sense of humor, stories to share, and hopes for their future.

“My favorite part of the book is when the author takes her mother and aunt to see *where their brother, Danny, is buried in France (the first family members to visit). It made my heart happy that they were able to make that pilgrimage, hold a family funeral service for him, and spend some time making trip memories together.

“So much effort and dedication was put into this heartfelt work of remembrance–it’s pages are a labor of love. Joy’s grandma, Leora, would surely be proud.”

*Danny Wilson’s sisters, Doris Neal and Darlene Scar, paid their respects at his grave during this week in 1997. Favorite Guy and I were their support crew. We spent time at Lorraine American Cemetery two days in a row. The second day we returned to hold our own worship service at Lt. Daniel W. Wilson’s gravestone.

Doris (age 79 in the photo) was my mother. Aunt Darlene (age 75) was the twin of Lt. Dale R. Wilson, who was also lost in combat (New Guinea) and has never been found.
