Man on the Moon
Lined up on the only couch in the farmhouse
where my husband Guy grew up, we all watched
Walter Cronkite’s live broadcast
of Apollo 11 and the moon landing,
on black and white TV thousands of miles away
in Iowa, where Guy was home on leave.
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first human
to step onto the surface of our moon.
One small step for man,
one giant leap for mankind.
Guy’s orders were for Vietnam,
where other humans waged war,
broadcast nightly on the news.

Three astronauts blasted off in Apollo 11 July 16, 1969. This fifth manned Apollo flight lasted until July 24, with the first moon landing on July 20.
Love these! Well written!
Thanks, Hoang!
Great nostalgia from this historic event! 🙂
Thank you, Nancy.
What a day that was.
It sure was, Jacqui.
A very touching poem, particularly with the last stanza.
Thank you, Liz. And now Parkinson’s. . .
You’re welcome, Joy. How is Guy doing now?
So so, complicated by painful neuropathy and probable hernia surgery! But we’re blessed, still in our own home. Thank you, Liz.
You’re welcome, Joy. I’m hoping my husband and I will be able to stay in our own home as we age.
What a great memory. Such amazing things have happened in our life time.
They sure have, Darlene, especially if we’ve been given decades to live!
Oh my goodness. Thank you, Joy. “Lined up on the couch”…sparks such a memory for me! 💝
Thank you, Vicki. I’m not watching in the photo, doing stitchery of some kind. So much of it was Walter Cronkite talking. Guy’s sister now takes something to stitch on everywhere she goes!
I love that SO much. But honestly, I still can’t figure out where all of those years went — feels like we zoomed from 1969 to today, doesn’t it??? 💝💝💝
Well, we’ve got several decades in between and had a son who’s turned into a girl dad. (I remember Mom saying that he grew up too fast. No, I was there every day and it was just about right. ha)
Teehee! 😉❤️😉
wow.
Such a blast from the past.
Thank you..
Thank you. And now my Favorite Guy lives Parkinson’s which was being seeded back then.
That was a super day. Nice memories for all of us. Thanks, Joy
Thank you, John. Well, except for the Vietnam part. Favorite Guy lives with Parkinson’s now.
Very nice, Joy. I remember that day very well.
Thank you, Dan.
Wonderful poetry, Joy, so nice that Guy was home on leave at that time. I was home on leave too, a 30 day leave after reenlisting for Vietnam.
Poignant for you as well, Tim. Michigan?
Illinois, Joy, where my dad was a minister of a Nazarene church. I was so busy dating the girl who eventually became my wife that I wasn’t paying any attention to the moon landing.
Well, Tim, that’s also historic!
