Grateful American
Joy Neal Kidney My ancestors chose this place, for freedom and hope, leaving behind the countries of their birth even before there was an America. Even with family members lost to a world war, and my husband living with Parkinson’s from the the Vietnam War, I’m grateful that my ancestors chose this place, that still invites immigrants and refugees, some from Bosnia I’ve been blessed to help settle here in Iowa, to attend a naturalization ceremony and new beginnings for one couple, to meet our most recent plumber who immigrated from Russia, to give thanks for my medical specialist, a young woman from Ecuador, to celebrate a waitress from Mexico an American citizen just a year, who came to in America’s heartland for opportunity and prosperity, I was born in America, the land my ancestors chose. I blessed to live in this country, still a beacon of freedom and hope.
Do you know the song “God Bless America”? It was written by Israel Beilin, a Russian Jew whose family had fled Europe. He became Irving Berlin, who wrote hundreds of songs, including our beloved “God Bless America.” Here is his story through Our American Stories.
A perfect poem. I feel the same about Canada. My family arrived in 1911, Germans from Russia, fleeing oppression.
Yes, both countries gave them freedom and hope!
Lovely poem, Joy. 🙂
Thank you, Nancy.
A terrific poem, Joy. Happy 4th
Thanks, John. May you enjoy the weekend as well! (Rescue dog Luna will be here for part of it.)
This is so good. Happy Independence Day.
Thanks so much, Kymber. Happy Independence Day to you as well!
Happy 4th to you and your favorite guy, Joy. Your Bosnia immigrant stories were so touching and part of what makes America great.
Thanks, Pete! And that waitress had just used her American passport for a dream trip to Paris! And I have an appointment with Dr. Flores on Monday.
Happy July 4th, Joy!
Thank you, Dawn!
Your lovely words show your gratitude for being an American, Joy. I hope you’re having a great Independence Day.
Thank you, Tim. I hope you are as well!
You’re welcome, Joy. 😍 Quiet so far, with rain.
We got another inch overnight. Three inches the night before.
According to my rain gauge, we got a half inch so far. It’s not raining now but supposed to start again soon, according to the weather forecast.
