Christmas Eve in my home church
Oh Come, All Ye Faithful
sung by the congregation
along the wooden pews
of the handsome brick church in Dexter,
as the robed choir processed to the
choir loft, “joyful and triumphant”
the carol goes on.
The miracle of the birth of the Christ Child
this holy evening, the gospel set to music.
The promised one, the savior of all,
born as a child.
Angels, shepherds, a manger.
Awe, wonder, questions.
A particular star in the east,
wise men. More questions.
This musical evening ended, lights turned off,
with the choir joining the congregation
shoulder to shoulder circling the room,
holding candles, a single flame
shared from one to another
absorbed in winsome wonder,
our faces aglow,
singing Silent Night, Holy Night.
Sleep in heavenly peace, the carol ends.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
May you experience the heavenly peace
brought to earth by the Christ Child,
remembered anew on this Christmas Eve.

That sounds like a beautiful service.
Thank you, Dan. Looked forward to every year. . .
That’s a beautiful stained glass window! I remember singing in the church choir on Christmas Eve when I was in high school.
That window is on the east side of the church so is especially nice on Sunday mornings!
Even better!
Merry Christmas, Joy 🎄
To you and your family as well, John.
Beautiful poem, Joy! Our Christmas Eve service will be at a Baptist church tonight. We have 3 churches in our tiny town of about 100 souls: Baptist, Episcopal, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Latter-Day Saints had a community Christmas breakfast 2 weeks ago for the whole town, and the Baptist Church and LDS put on a live Nativity. We Episcopalians are a tiny congregation- but we have the sweetest gothic style historic church, and we enjoy joining in with the whole community. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all of your best beloveds!
Thank you, Lori. And for your note and greetings. May you enjoy a warm and wonderful Christmas season as well.
