The German U-boat captured the day I was born, two days before D-Day

The German U-boat U-505 was captured two days before D-Day, also the day I was born.

If you’ve been through the German sub at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, this is its fascinating story. Especially its trip through the St. Lawrence Seaway through the Great Lakes and across several lanes of Chicago traffic!

  1. I haven’t been through that U-boat, but I’ve toured the USS Clamagore, a US sub that was once a showpiece at Patriot’s Point in Mount Pleasant/Charleston, SC. It has since been sunk as an artificial reef because of deterioration of the hull and consequent environmental contamination.

    • Dennis, when this one began to deteriorate outside, they managed to build a spot so it’s inside now. The story of its trip through the St. Lawrence Seaway through the Great Lakes and across several lanes of Chicago traffic is the most fascinating part!

  2. Happy birthday, Joy! Thanks for sharing the fascinating story about U-boat U-505. I watched the video as they drove it through the city. Masterful maneuvers! 🙂

  3. The history of the U-505 is fascinating, Joy. I remember going through the submarine at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry as a student in Gary, Indiana, where I grew up.

    • What a great museum! We took son Dan there when he was a kid. That’s when I noted the date the sub was captured, not knowing that someday it would become a blog post!
