Ray Bubba Sorensen Mural for an American Legion Post

A new mural inside the Radcliffe American Legion may turn out to be a tourist attraction. The mural was done by The Freedom Rock® artist, Ray Bubba Sorensen.

It will be officially revealed Sunday, January 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Radcliff Legion’s monthly winter breakfast fundraiser.

Radcliffe, Iowa, population 555, is an hour north of Des Moines.

  1. An outstanding mural, Joy. Mr. Sorensen must be praised, not only for his talent, but his wish to keep those men remembered!

I hope the storm is not causing you too much hardship.

  2. It is so great that you continue to promote “Bubba”. I met Ray in April 2000, as he was painting north of Greenfield, IA. The Freedom Rock.com is a worthy and patriotic cause. I have donated several times and am due again. Bubba and Joy, keep up the good work!

    • Bob, you must have been there during May, any May, since he repaints most of the original Freedom Rock before Memorial Day every year. I’ll email you a photo of our mothers at The Freedom Rock!

  3. This is an interesting depiction of soldiers from three different wars. We need more patriotic murals like this! Just an FYI, Joy, your blog posts don’t show up in Reader for me. They never have. I have to do a search to find your new blogs. 🙂

    • Someone else has had the same problem with posts. Ray Bubba Sorensen has painted Freedom Rocks in all 99 Iowa counties, and is now doing them in other states. (All five Wilson brothers are remembered on the Dallas County Freedom Rock near Minburn, where they were tenant farmers with their dad before and during WWII.)

  4. Yes, it may have been early May, not late April. Mom (your Aunt Darlene) was still at “the lake”, had heard about this first Freedom Rock, and wanted to see it. Bubba is so talented and worthy of any support! Extra info for the benefit of other readers, of course.

    • Sorensen is an Iowa treasure! Grandma Leora’s five sons who served in WWII are remembered on the Dallas County Freedom Rock at Minburn, Iowa, which he also designed and painted. The family farmed (tenants) near Minburn until all five sons left to serve.
