From a Stuart newspaper: “This 1939 B John Deere tractor was placed atop a specially designed steel pole by members of the 5X80 Two Cylinder Club as a means of promoting two cylinder tractors. Members of the club spent a lot of time preparing the tractor for its eventually resting place. Members removed the inner workings of the tractor and then sandblasted and painted the tractor. It is located south of Stuart, across from the Stuart 66 truck stop.”

This is just off I-80, so you can’t miss it!
Facebook has a John Deere Two-Cylinder Club. These are the tractors with the familiar “putt putt” sound.

I remember that sound!
A very cool monument to remind us where our food comes from!
I like to see these old farm machines. My favorite stop at the county fair was the old tractor barn. Most of that equipment was in running order, making sounds no modern tractor can match.
You’re right about how they sound. Guy and I loved being at the Iowa State Fair on the day the old tractors lined up along the Grand Concourse. We’d stand by whichever one was running. (It was fun to be there on classic cars day, for the same reason.)
Car sounds, yeah. How unexciting are noiseless electric cars. Might make me give up driving. Almost.
Great history, Joy.
Stuart is the next town west of Dexter, so we’d see it often.
The John Deere tractor on the pole is the type of art/statue that appeals to me. It has real meaning. And the cornfield in the background makes it suitable for framing for picture lovers.
At least it made the local paper!
Of course, I’ve seen it “a hundred times”. What year was it erected?
The clipping isn’t dated, but I asked on a Stuart FB page. I wish the nearby restaurant were still in business. Covid became its doom.
1994!
