Civil War Veterans Buried at Dexter, Iowa

I was surprised at how many Civil War veterans are buried in the Dexter Cemetery–at least 32. Most of them, if not all, served in units from other states, then ended up in Iowa. There are still relatives of these men in the area.

When you visit the cemetery, you may find headstones for several of these in the old section.

John Gowdey was the last Civil War veteran left when he died in 1935 at age 93.

Pictures of a few of them:

Francis Jones (1839-1912)

Miles C. “Bob” Marshall (son of Miles Marshall), John Neal (father of O.S. Neal) , J.Q.A. Reynolds (father of Conger Reynolds).

The Find a Grave website gives information and a photo of the gravestones in the Dexter cemetery, plus personal photos and any other information for each person if someone contributes them.

    • Especially where the battles were fought. So many of the veterans buried at Dexter fought with units father east–Indiana, Illinois, etc., but ended up in Iowa after the war. I had only one relative who enlisted from Dallas County, Iowa. He was killed July 4, 1863, and is buried in tiny Wiscotta cemetery near his commander, who was killed the next year.

  1. we have 4 civil war soldiers buried in our little church/township cemetery in Montgomery County, iowa

    • I was surprised that Dexter had so many. Findagrave made it possible for me to quickly check the names listed in the 1968 centennial history. Since the story was posted, another woman shared pictures and information of another man on the list! His Findagrave page didn’t have a picture of him, so now it will. You’re in SW Iowa. Are you staying dry???
