Spider in the Choir Loft (or Saved by a Tenor)

If you dislike spiders, you’ll relate to this one.

One Sunday morning while I was in the choir in the front of the church, a spider decided to descend from the open rafters to the choir loft. Right over my hair.

Thanks to a nearby tenor, I survived the onslaught.

Editor Laura Gift of The Dallas County News enjoyed illustrating this one, dated  October 5, 1995.

She sent a note saying she’d particularly enjoyed my piece on spiders and hoped I’d continue to submit my columns to them. She said that my “descriptive style and insightful perspective are delightful.”

Well, that certainly gave my writing heart a boost! I haven’t been able to locate Laura Gift, but I’d sure like to thank her for such welcome encouragement.

The creepy spider story is in Chapter 4: Flora and Fauna in The Immigrant and the Outlaw: A Collection of Stories from America’s Heartland.
