Christmas Eve in my home church

Christmas Eve in my home church

Oh Come, All Ye Faithful
sung by the congregation
along the wooden pews
of the handsome brick church in Dexter,
as the robed choir processed to the
choir loft, “joyful and triumphant”
the carol goes on.

The miracle of the birth of the Christ Child
this holy evening, the gospel set to music.
The promised one, the savior of all,
born as a child.
Angels, shepherds, a manger.
Awe, wonder, questions.
A particular star in the east,
wise men. More questions.

This musical evening ended, lights turned off,
with the choir joining the congregation
shoulder to shoulder circling the room,
holding candles, a single flame
shared from one to another
absorbed in winsome wonder,
our faces aglow,
singing Silent Night, Holy Night.

Sleep in heavenly peace, the carol ends.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
May you experience the heavenly peace
brought to earth by the Christ Child,
remembered anew on this Christmas Eve.
