My Brother’s Keeper, Book 5 in The Lawman Series by William Ablan
From Amazon: In the real world, whenever a crime is committed, we don’t have to prove a motive. All we have to prove is that someone did it.
But when a detective is shot in the chest by another police officer, motive becomes very important.
Was it some kind of insane accident? After all, the Officer who did the shooting had been assaulted and might have been incoherent.
Or is something else going on here? Was this a setup for murder? it did happen almost in the middle of nowhere with no one around.
That’s the question Sheriff Will Diaz and his team must answer. What happened out at the Colorado/New Mexico state line early on a Sunday morning and why?
My Thoughts
Sheriff Will Diaz is back with another troublesome case to solve. One of his officers accidently shot another. Or was it intentional? Attempted murder? In My Brother’s Keeper the reader knows early in the story “who done it,” but now to sort out the motive. And what does a cattle prod have to do with the mystery?
Rich in characters and setting (southern Colorado, nearly to New Mexico), the novel wrestles with gritty and psychological issues police officers deal with, along with the back stories of those they must wrangle with. Knowing those involved in crimes, especially if they work in law enforcement with you, adds to the stress.
The author’s fascination with astronomy shows up in his stories: “I always watched the stars. They stood out like hard diamonds this far from the lights of the city. A ghostly cloud wound across the sky, our own Milky Way Galaxy.
“They were old friends in the heavens. There was Vega, a blue-white diamond. Altair, white and beautiful. The stars folded into lines and formed the constellations of old. . . ”
Like the other books in the The Lawman Series, My Brother’s Keeper is a stand-alone. But do yourself a favor and enjoy them all to capture the wealth of connections between the characters and the refreshing honesty of Sheriff Diaz in a career that can be brutal.
