I was surprised at how many Civil War veterans are buried in the Dexter Cemetery–at least 32. Most of them, if not all, served in units from other states, then ended up in Iowa. There are still relatives of these men in the area.
When you visit the cemetery, you may find headstones for several of these in the old section.
John Gowdey was the last Civil War veteran left when he died in 1935 at age 93.
Pictures of a few of them:
Francis Jones (1839-1912)
Miles C. “Bob” Marshall (son of Miles Marshall), John Neal (father of O.S. Neal) , J.Q.A. Reynolds (father of Conger Reynolds).

The Find a Grave website gives information and a photo of the gravestones in the Dexter cemetery, plus personal photos and any other information for each person if someone contributes them.
